THE WINE INDUSTRY IN PORTUGAL

The Portuguese wine sector stands out for the economic value it provides and the social role it plays, enriching the culture and history of Portugal. Despite the country's small territorial size, it ranks among the world's leading wine producers and consumers.

In the 18th century, viticulture, like other aspects of national life, was influenced by the Marquis of Pombal. As a result, a major region benefited from protectionist measures - the Alto Douro region and the famous Port Wine.

In 1907/1908, the process of regulating several other Portuguese denominations began: Madeira wines, Moscatel de Setúbal, Carcavelos, Dão, Colares, and Vinho Verde.

In 1937, the National Wine Board (JNV) was established, intervening to maintain the balance between supply and demand, the evolution of production, and the storage of surpluses in years of high production, in order to compensate for years of scarcity.

It was replaced in 1986 by the Institute of the Vine and Wine (IVV), a body adapted to the structures imposed by the new market policy resulting from Portugal's accession to the European Community.

A new perspective then emerged in the Portuguese economy and, consequently, in viticulture. The concept of Denomination of Origin was harmonized with community legislation, and the "Regional Wine" classification was created for table wines with geographical indication, reinforcing the quality policy of Portuguese wines.

Portugal falls into the category of Old World producers, with millennial techniques for refining the production process, being an important agent of economic development for the country.

Portalegre Cooperative Winery

The Portalegre Cooperative Winery was one of the historic wineries of the Alentejo, which since 1954 has helped build the modern era of Alentejo wine. It created some classic brands and introduced the virtues of the old vines of the Serra de São Mamede.
