Buying and Selling

Photography Tips

14 tips to improve your photos and get better results.

Photos are an important part of a lot’s description on LEILOSOC® Worldwide. Users study the images in detail before they even consider placing a bid. Good photos therefore lead to higher proceeds and help avoid disappointed buyers.

Use suitable lighting

Natural light brings out the details of an item. Light from ordinary bulbs hides the item’s true colours, and flash photos can cause shadows and an unattractive look.

Keep the camera steady

If the camera moves, your photos lose sharpness. Use a tripod or some other way of keeping the camera still when you take the shot.

Show only the items you want to sell

Other objects can distract potential bidders, make the item less appealing and even cause confusion about what is included in the lot.

Use a neutral background

A plain, neutral background helps your lot stand out.

Photograph every side

Bidders want to see as much detail as possible. So always include photos of the front, back, top and bottom of your item.

Make sure the items are clean and presentable

To show your lot at its best, it is worth cleaning it properly before taking the photos.

Use neutral reference points

For items of unusual or irregular size, include a sense of scale in the photo — a tape measure, for example.

Show the item’s condition faithfully

Signs of wear and minor damage should be mentioned in the description as well as shown very clearly.

Choose the right camera

A digital camera is much better than a smartphone camera for close-up shots.

Your best photo is your calling card

The first image in your set of photos will be used as the main image, shown on the auction page.

Leave nothing out

If your lot includes more than one item, remember to add at least one photo that shows the whole lot.

Avoid self-portraits

Take care when photographing items with reflective surfaces or against reflective backgrounds.

Don’t adjust the colours

Digital editing of your photos should be limited to correcting the angle and cropping the image. Never adjust the colours.

Show the relevant details

Bidders pay close attention to marks and stamps, serial numbers, signatures and autographs, markings, labels, tags and so on.
